Here's an interesting piece of speculation: the Grodnik store shares a name with a commercial building in Dinkytown, a U of M neighborhood. (Extant.) Some speculate that Dinkytown took its name from Grodnik - Grod being a Slavic work for town, Nik being a diminutive.
