The print was owned by some fellows who used it to practice their axe-juggling act; it’s all hacked up. Here’s the first thing you see:
It's described in imdb as "Comedy / Horror," two things that rarely go together. It's also an English "Comedy / Horror" if you're a fan of the genre. If it is a genre. For all I know this is the only movie in the genre. It concerns a poltergeist which throws vases around the room while trumpets play the same mocking "it's this funny but also spooky" wah-wah-wah theme. Honestly, you hear it 67 times. Wah-wah-wah, wuh-wuh-wuh. Eventually the poltergeist is banished, but not before there's lots of old-man huggermugger about ghosts and beasties and I-say-what-what there's no whiskey about, and dash it all this confounded mutton is cold, and so on.
In a way, this is the absolutely perfect 100 Mysteries movie. It's not very good. It's not entirely bad. It's a B-minus movie at best, a straight C for most of the time. The print is scratchy, bleached, with more lines than Scarface's coffee table on Saturday night. The soundtrack was filtered through a box containing steel wool and Karo syrup. It's full of actors of whom you never heard, but had long careers. Someone on imdb.com liked it and said it's fun for a rainy afternoon. Someone uploaded it to archive.org just because nothing should ever be lost forever. It's just a movie.
But. Quite a few people worked on it; quite a few people were proud of what they did. For some it was a paycheck. For the young up-and-coming it was the first rung. For the old down-and-going it was a chance to show they still had it. When it hit the small town theater a few people went to see it - on a rainy day, it was good for a rainy day - and sat in the dark, smoked, ate peanuts, forgot about the day outside, maybe tried to make some time with their date. When it was done people got up and collected their coats and went outside, had that brief moment of readjustment to the real world, and wondered if they should go straight home or perhaps stop for a bite. Some pie would be nice. No coffee, it's late.
It's just a movie. They're all just movies. But if you started with #1 and made it this far, you've learned something. It wasn't all Casablanca and Gone with the Wind. It was these guys, too. Wah, wah, wah.
