Now we’re looking north, and lo: behold the Black Building, in all its alabaster glory. It was named for its progenitor, businessman George Black, about whose whimsy and initiative we’ll learn more later. On the corner, the Globe Clothing Company and the Garrick theater. The marquee shows the names “James Hall” and “Marie Prevost,” which would suggest the movie is “The Good Bad Girl” from 1931. (Prevost would die six years later, and be immortalized in a Nick Lowe song in 1978.)

You might be wondering: are there any period photos of the Black building, and might I provide a very large version of one for your enjoyment? Wonder no more, and click next.
