The smokestack, incidentally, says Union Light Heat and Power; for many years a messy sooty power plant stood alongside the tracks, and grew to enormous proportions before it was demolished. The structure on the right still stands. Everyone is dead, of course, but that’ll happen.

At the risk of dipping into the vast rich world of train lore, I must note that the Overland Limited doesn’t seem to have been a NP train; my research (i.e., skimming Wikipedia) indicates that it was a Union Pacific train. I await the inevitable amplification at james –at – lileks dot com.
