Now and then odd things turn up at the show; this was a signed publicity photo for John MacDougall, Newsman. I knew John when he was the voice of KSTP AM-1500’s news segments; by then he looked nothing like this at all. Bigger, older, rounder, but larger than life and surely larger than the small room in which he spent his last days broadcasting. A veteran of the early days of Twin Cities live TV, he might have regarded his last posting as a demotion – or he could have been grateful to use his unparalleled pipes long after his superficial telegenic qualities had faded. Or both. He never seemed resentful, and in fact he made you feel as though you were part of something much bigger than a little radio station at the end of the dial; you were part of KSTP, by God, and what’s more – far more – you were a broadcaster. Dave Moore wasn’t our Lou Grant. Mac was. |
