Another work from his Brown Period, "Composition #3" was regarded as Brassefort's "breakthrough" work, although that had more to do with the movers accidentally shattering the gallery door window when removing it.
The sale of this work boosted interest in Compositions 1 & 2, but neither existed. Brassefort had given the painting this title in case it sold, in which case he would do #2, sell it, then insist that #1 was "lost." In a letter he said it was his way of putting away a little money for the future. |
