I think he's refering to the book "Live Alone - and Like It!" It was a 1936 guide for young women who wanted more out of life than instant household drudgery after high school. They wanted careers! Unfortunately, these careers - and any chance of happiness - could be wrecked if you drank coffee after 11 AM, because you'd be up all night, unable to sleep, worried about missing your 5 AM flight, and then you'd spill hot coffee in a passenger's lap. Even pilots, the Lotharios of the sky, ended up avoiding you.

Why do people pick fights, anyway? It's not always coffee nerves. Perhaps Mr. CN had a brother involved in long-term projects, twisting people's personalties in unfortunate directions.

Anyway, it's obvious Mr. CN should be bothering the people who make Postum - arranging some sort of "accident" or industrial disaster.

"Curses" really is a generic catch-all. I don't know if it was intended as a euphemism, or a means of gathering the power of all available oaths.
