1947 ad: Peter Pain Returns for Thanksgiving!

It’s an old microfiche scan of a color ad, so the details of Peter Pain – a pickly green bastard – are poor. But you get the drift. Henry, who is not 20 anymore, is spending Thanksgiving chasing the turkey, so he can kill it and eat it. This being Thanksgiving, you’d think he had already gotten around to the killing / plucking business, but what the heck. They had all day. How long did it take to cook one of those things, anyway? An hour? Two?

If you’ll note the upper right-hand corner, you’ll see that the bird is saying “Wings! Start Flappin’!” It’s a reference, I’m sure, to “Feets, Start Walking” or some such bit of pop-slang.

In the corner, Peter Pain lurks, ready to inflict misery. He hates Thanksgiving, and what better way to show it than driving an axe into the back of Henry?

Now we’re talking turkey. I have no idea what that means. Well, in a way, I do; it has come to mean a frank discussion, but how shaping exhaled breath with our tongue to form sounds related to a large bird has come to mean blunt colloquy, I’ve no idea.

Henry’s not 20 anymore; he’s six. Pain has infantilized him, and Mother is coming with Ben-Gay. (ahem.) Peter Pain cautions Henry against it, but Henry either does not notice the Agony Sprite, or has come to believe that the subject of topically applied analgesics is not one about which Peter Pain would offer an unbiased opinion.

The thrilling conclusion on the next page.
