Reality was apparently so harsh that the authors of this gospel resorted to stylized line drawings. If you contemplate the pictures, you see the effects of the Depression: the color has been drained from life. The Jell-O user is waif-thin, perhaps emaciated from deprivation; she can barely hold her glass aloft, and her eyes stare blankly ahead to an uncertain future.
