Mr. Happy Egg was a mascot for Humpty-Dumpty Food Mart - something that makes his happiness here all the more poignant. He struts around in his prelapsarian state, unaware that the name of his sponsor contains the seeds of his eventual destruction. In all illustrations - and there are dozens - Mr. Egg has that manic cheer, a cross between untrammeled glee and psychosis so common to mascots. Here he is seen performing two altogether typical acts: in one, he is emotionally moved by the feel of soft toilet paper against his hard, unfeeling shell; in the second - the most chilling tableau of his career - he contemplates matricide, about to smash in a head of a chicken, the very species that gave him birth. Oddly enough, while he is an egg himself, he has grown to dimensions no normal chicken could excrete. Clearly, he is an adult who takes comfort in the trappings of childhood, much like those stunted men who find sexual pleasure in dressing up as swaddled infants.
That said, he requires no attention and is a good whistler. A fine addition to any web site. |
