Super Dan and Super Dave were mascots for, not surprisingly, SuperValu, a Minnesota-based grocery store chain. Dave's main job was to gesture
proudly at things - the company logo, a special, a sale on celery, etc. His sunny cheer is made more impressive when you realize that his hands are deformed; he seems to have no self-consciousness.
He was replaced by Dan, whose features betray his ambition. His smile can only mean that he schemed and plotted for years to take Dave's place; he can hardly contain his happiness at having secured this plum position. He, too, was eventually retired, and now sits alone, the groceries in his sack-torso decaying, his moment of glory passed.
But Dave's doing okay in his retirement.
