Spoons, Spoons

One of the rare signed works in the Collection - This is a genuine Jim Whitcomb reproduction, and captures a little-known moment in American history: the explosion of the White Orchard Spoon Factory in 1955. Spoons were found embedded in brick walls up to three miles away. The artist has captured an unusual moment in this now-forgotten tragedy - the expression of a collector, or “spoonthusiast,” seeing dozens of her beloved spoons fall from the heavens. The reality was much grimmer - the woman, believed to be Mrs. Henry Serviette, was found stuck to a wall across from a broken plate glass window, held to the plaster by over 55 stunning, elegant pieces of flatware, including the popular Lady Hamilton line.
