THE INCUBUS

The artist is unknown, as is usually the case. Pity; this is one instance where scholars would be curious about his life and circumstances. The work is part of the Armpit Revelation genre, but there are odd details that set it apart from a standard example. We have a double Revelation, but the areas are almost covered by a garment. An example of a prudish vogue? Or does it mean that she is not as pure and shaven as she may seem, and by her behavior - her wanton lust - she has invited the evil, invisible demon she appears to be fighting off?

The hellishness of the room would seem to favor that interpretation.
