Once upon a time there was a brand called Cities Service – a rather strange name that didn’t quite seem right. City Service, sure. Cities’ Service, maybe. But Cities Service just looks odd, like, well, like the spelling of gasoline. At least one thing was sure: only their gas had  all five.

Five what, I don’t know.

Cities Service built one of the last great Moderne skyscrapers of the pre-crash boom, visible here. The company became CITGO, and now it’s owned by Hugo Chavez, for all practical purposes. But once the company was as American as they came – why, even the giant floating upper body of Ed McMahon teamed up with NASCAR to sing their praises. You cannot get more American than that.
