The Father of Hungarian Freedom did indeed lead a revolt in 1848, and was released from prison in 1851. (He actually fled Hungary and ended up in a Turkish jail, the very definition of “bad luck.”) After his release he went to the United States and ended in Iowa, of all places.

The appearance of this cachet in 1958 and the Hungarian troubles of a few years before are no doubt completely coincidental. (Take that, Ivan!)
