It’s Grady from Sanford and Son! Beloved by Brazilians everywhere, he received his own note in . . . sorry, no. It’s Joachim Machado De Assis, and until I researched this note I didn’t actually know he was Black. (Or Brazilian-African, if you wish to use the American definition.) The icon tells you his profession: a writer, and one of the greats of his age and culture. He translated Shakespeare into Portuguese (from the original Klingon, perhaps?), wrote popular and serious novels, and founded the Brazilian Academy of Letters (he personally donated C, T and W.) (Sorry; it's late, and I'm punchy & stupid.)

You’ll note that the bill’s value went from 1000 Cruzados to One New Cruzado. What’s the difference between one new Cruzado and 1000 new Cruzados? About a year, probably.
