Rafael Yglesias Castro was the President from 1894 to 1902, during which he narrowly survived an assassination attempt that blew off part of his hair. (Actually, no.) He was the grandson of Jose Maria Castro Madriz, known as the “Founder of the Republic of Costa Rica.”

So all the websites say. On a related note, my gringo friends, have you heard of the Federal Republic of Central America? It was news to me as well. It was an attempt to cobble together a nation out of different states, US- style, and included Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and a chunk of Mexico. It lasted from 1823 to  1840, with the last two years characterized by  “hella civil war.”
