Dr. Eugenio de Santa Cruz y Espejo, Ecuadorian doctor and author. Liberal-minded and descended from a mixed marrage, he was one of those men cursed to live 200 years ahead of their time. But he did his best; he wrote anonymous sarcastic broadsides against the government, formed a society to improve the city of Quito, and founded he national library.

Naturally, he ended his life in jail.
