RADISSON INN, Grand Portage MN

It was completely Buckaroo'd. Absolutely, relentlessly shingled.

That lobby design was the most modern thing in the world, at the time. It had no historical precedent. This was regarded as a good thing.

History: the Lake Superior Chippewa were granted Federal money in 1973 to build a resort. Hilton was supposed to manage it, but stepped out at the last minute. Radisson took over with the understanding that the tribe would get the profits. Radisson turned it over to the tribe in 1980.

It has a casino now, and the exterior's better.
