Originally the Miles, then the Garrick; it was gutted in '29 and reopened as the Century, then spent the Depression opening and closing with grim regularity.

It had a reputation as a "woman's theater," since it was so close to the department stores on Nicollet. That's the Kresge on the right; looming in the distance, Donaldson's. The picture is pure mid-century Minneapolis - Fanny Farmer chocolates, Goodman's jewelers. The terra cotta on the extreme left is the Forum - an old theater itself, but a cafeteria when this picture was taken. The Century would have been just another downtown theater . . . but then it got an upgrade. Click on.
