This was the second building. It's still standing. After the Fed moved out of this one, it sat vacant and unloved. It leaked. It had, asbestos. It sits atop a forbidding plaza. Most of the office space was underground. Nevertheless, it's a landmark. You can see its structural design in the curtainwall - that big swoop is the famous load-bearing arch; the building is literally supported like a bridge by the two end pillars. We're all so used to it that its beauty tends to be overlooked.
It was purchased by an investment group, gutted and turned into office space - with a new addition that destroyed the elegance of the original design. |
