The tall thin building was the St. James Hotel. At 12 stories, it was one of the tallest in town - but I can find absolutely nothing about it. Had I not found this card buried in a postcard shop, I'd never have known what it was.

The Union Mission - formerly the Pence Opera House - holds down the corner; the sign offers the famous Never-Spread Mattress. Given the claims of the time, spreading was almost guaranteed. But what do you expect for $15?
