This one breaks your heart. Every city has a few fine hotels, a batch of also-rans, some bum-bed shops in the skid-row district, and one great old lady. This was ours; the Nicollet Hotel.

Eventually, its size worked against it. It went broke, was sold, joined a chain, then ended up as Soul's Harbor - the very name of which has a melancholy ring. Eventually it was abandoned, and stood at the gateway to downtown, a big dead mountain with a hundred empty eyes. There was talk of turning into condos, but it didn't work out. The building was demolished in the 80s, and the site sits empty to this day.

This site has the original design for the hotel, photos of its heyday, postcards, and woebegone shots of the site today.
