Here's a brief look at Southdale, which opened Oct. 8 1962. Designed by Victor Gruen, it was the first enclosed mall in the United States, and boasted a light court that was supposedly the biggest in the nation.
It had two anchors - Dayton's and Donaldson's, both downtown mainstays that would go on to stake out a place in all the regional malls. After Southdale came Brookdale, Rosedale, and Ridgedale . . . and a few thousand others around the nation.
