Pence Building
A shot from the files of the Star-Tribune, used when the building was sold in 1948. The article about the sale said the Pence had been constructed in 1922, and perhaps that's true - but if so, the architectural details of the building would indicate the architect had a small romantic attachment to the work of Sullivan, Elmslie, and other early 20th century skyscraper artists. The building is fairly straightforward, with the usual tripartite division - base, shaft, column, with the shaft rising unadorned, and the base loaded with eye candy for passersby. The details are intriguing - click next for closeups.
