Fire didn't take it; time didn't take it. With proper care the building could be around today, perhaps - but the decision to raze the Gateway district doomed the Phoenix. A photo of its destruction can be found here.

The Phoenix was replaced by a parking ramp for a new Sheraton hotel, the pride of a revitalized downtown.

It was demolished in 1990.
