I have a confession: I don't like the music of this era. It does nothing for me. It's all wheezy, sentimental, treble-toned warbling. But that's just me. 
 Many of these selections have been chosen because they're typical, and hence a good primer for someone unfamiliar with the period. Or they're unusual.
