Beautifully drawn. Don't you suspect that the "mother" is not her mother, but her husband's? And there's a note of condescending ingratiation in her voice when she says it, which might account for Mother's tense carriage and disengaged expression. She's never quite approved of her son's choice in women. Oh, she's nice enough, and certainly seems more than able to spend the family money on cars and extravagant coats, but there's just something comnon about her. The way she talks about gasoline, for heaven's sake. It's just not done.
