Took me years to figure out that “Holsum” was an intentional misspelling of “Wholesome.” As a kid I thought the bakery was run by Mr. Holsum, who lived in town somewhere, probably in a mansion.

The Holsum brand was purchased by  Mr. W. E. Long in 1908, who subsequently invented the concept of sliced, packaged bread. Forty years after he bought the brand, he came up with something called the Holsum Unification Program, which took the brand national.

An accomplishment exceeds the work of the person who defaced the wall.
